TOEFL Alternatives

The following students can be accepted to Highline without the TOEFL:

  1. Students who graduated from any U.S. high school or a school with which Highline has established an agreement.
  2. Students who have completed at least one academic year at a high school where English is the primary mode of instruction in one of these countries: Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Republic of Ireland.
  3. Students who attended an accredited International School. Transcripts, official exam results, or a letter from the school on letterhead must accompany the Highline application.
  4. Students who have completed at least English 5 (or A) in Sweden with a grade of E or above (or G or above prior to the 2011 Swedish grading system reforms). Transcripts, official exam results, or a letter from the school on letterhead affirming this must accompany the Highline application.
  5. Students who scored at the level indicated on the following tests:
    • Kaplan TOEFL Practice Test score of 54
    • STEP/EIKEN Test: 2A/Pre-Grade 1
    • IELTS - 5.5 with no band lower than 5.5
    • iTEP - 3.5
    • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) - a score of C or better
    • GCE (General Certificate of Education) - A-level, O-level or N-level
    • IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) - Grade E or better in English
    • HKDSE (Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education) - 3 or higher
    • HKALE (Hong Kong Advanced Level Exam) - Grade E or better
    • HKCEE (Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination) - D/3 or better
    • Cambridge Exam - O or A Levels
    • PTE Academic (Pearson) - Score of 42 or higher
  6. Students who have attended an approved ESL program within the United States can be accepted without a TOEFL score. The TOEFL is waived for students who complete the level indicated from the following schools:
    • American Cultural Exchange (ACE) - Level 5
    • Central Washington University-UESL- Level 4
    • Concord - Level 6
    • EF International Language Schools - B2 or Institutional TOEFL from EF
    • ELC (English Language Center) - Level 600A
    • ELS Language Centers - Level 107
    • FLS International Intensive English Programs - Level 11
    • International House - Level 5 with recommendation letter
    • Intrax English Programs - Level 6
    • Kaplan - High Intermediate Level
    • New England School of English - Level 10
    • North Seattle College - ESL Level 5 or 6, then take the Accuplacer Reading test scoring 26 or higher
    • PLI (Canada) - Level B2
    • Poly Language Institute - Level 7 with advisors recommendation letter
    • Stafford House International - Level 4
    • South Seattle College - Level 5
    • Talk International - Completion of Level 7
    • Washington Academy of Languages - College Preparation 1
    • Washington State University (WSU) -IALC - Level 4
  7. Students who are currently attending a college or university in the US may be admitted by earning a 26 or higher on Highline's Accuplacer Reading test. Please note the following restrictions:
    • Students must be in valid F-1 status and eligible to transfer their valid I-20.
    • Students must not be currently attending Kaplan International Centers.
    • Students must take the Accuplacer Reading test on Highline's campus during regular testing hours.
