First license? You will need to pass a knowledge test, vision screening, and a driving test. These tests are administered at separate testing centers. If you would like to practice driving before the driving test, you will also need to purchase an instruction permit. You must pass the knowledge test and vision screening before you will be given a permit.

Where can I take the driving skills test?

Already have a license? If you have a valid license from another US state, British Columbia, Germany, South Korea, or Taiwan, there are no tests required. (Taiwanese citizens, please contact TECO for assistance.) See for more information.

Car Insurance Companies

There are many car insurance companies in Washington State We recommend "shopping" for a car insurance company that will work best for you and best fits your budget.

Some questions to consider when shopping for car insurance:

  • Are there translators with your company who speak my language?

  • Does your company offer a safe driver discount?

  • Can you explain your policies to me in simple terms?

  • What are your payment options?

  • How do I manage my account/insurance?

  • How much will my coverage cost?
